AIR DUCT TESTING IN GASTONIA, NC

How well are the ducts in your home holding up? If the answer is, “I don’t know,” you’re not alone. It’s difficult to tell the condition of ductwork when you can’t see most of it hidden behind the walls and ceilings of a house. This is why professional duct testing is such an important service. Technicians with special equipment can measure how well your ducts hold air pressure. If air pressure in the ducts rapidly drops, the technicians will know that the ductwork has lost integrity and will require sealing, repairs, or replacements.

FSM Heat & Air has more than a decade of experience providing HVAC services to Gastonia, NC and the surrounding areas. That includes performing duct testing to help our customers restore their damaged ventilation systems. You only have to give us a call to arrange for the duct testing that will put you on the road toward an energy-saving solution for your heating and cooling.

WHEN TO SCHEDULE DUCT TESTING IN GASTONIA

Duct testing is something you should arrange for your house either as a routine service (proactive) or when you believe the ducts are causing problems for your HVAC system (reactive).

  • Proactive duct testing: It’s a smart idea to have duct testing done every few years. Often problems will start up in the ventilation system because of standard wear and tear, but it will not create an obvious signs. If you have professionals test the ducts every 4 to 5 years, you’ll catch trouble early and have it fixed.
  • Reactive duct testing: When you notice that your HVAC system is costing more to run, or there are strange odors coming from the vents, it’s possible that leaks in the air ducts are the problem. Don’t hesitate to call for testing whenever you believe there’s something wrong in the vents.

HOW PROFESSIONALS TEST DUCTS

The basic goal of duct testing is to see how well the ductwork of the ventilation system is able to hold air pressure. Since the ducts are supposed to maintain an airtight seal along their length, any leaks will cause a noticeable drop in pressure. To measure this, technicians first seal off all the registers that open in the house to completely seal off the ventilation system. They then attach a large power vacuum to the main duct leaving the air conditioning and heater cabinet to raise the pressure in the sealed system. Manometers measure the pressure level to see if it drops and how fast it drops. The quicker the drop, the poorer the integrity of the ducts. This information will tell the technicians how much work needs to be done.
